The University of Queensland has appointed a new member to its senior executive, with Professor Iain Watson being named the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement).

Professor Watson currently serves as UQ’s Executive Dean of the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law (BEL), and will begin his new role in August.

UQ Vice-Chancellor and President Professor Peter Høj said the newly-created position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (External Engagement) would play an integral role in leading the University’s overall engagement strategy.

“The position will work collaboratively with all UQ portfolios to develop, articulate and sustain a shared vision of engagement,” he said.

“The portfolio will include the Office of the Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Indigenous Engagement), the Advancement Office, the Office of Marketing and Communications (including the Office of Prospective Students and Student Equity), and the UQ Art Museum.”

Professor Watson has a long history in the higher education sector, and as Executive Dean of BEL he has overseen a successful philanthropic program and initiated high-impact alumni and industry engagement activities for the Faculty.

“Professor Watson has extensive networks with business, community and government organisations and brings considerable experience in fundraising, engagement and alumni relations,” Professor Høj said.

“His focus on building cross-disciplinary relationships and his understanding of UQ priorities will be fundamental to the success of the role in facilitating connectivity between internal colleagues and external partners.”

Professor Watson has been with UQ since 2010, initially serving as Head of the UQ Business School before becoming Executive Dean of BEL in December 2011.

Before joining UQ he served as Deputy Dean (Operations) in the University of Western Australia Business School.

Professor Watson hold a PhD in accounting and finance (University of Ulster, 1996) and a Bachelor of Arts and Master of Science in Data Information Management, also from Ulster.
